Week 10: Reviewing
Welcome to week 10!
The majority of my work this week has been centered on continuing my revision and proof-reading of the three interviews I was assigned, as previously mentioned in weeks prior. The members of our team who worked on these originally were clearly very diligent, as there are few mistakes to mention. Whenever the speaker, typically the interviewee, is saying something indecipherable or unintelligible, there is a "(???)" left in the space of the word or phrase that cannot be transcribed. I have, thus far, been able to only decipher one of them, however the rest are unlikely to change. These entries are usually due to the speaker mumbling or stuttering, or switching topics mid conversation that that leads to a jumbling of words that can't really be transcribed very coherently. It's incredibly common, and my work transcribing these interviews has made me realize how often I do this very same thing when talking to others. Talking over myself as I switch between topics, or change course of conversation to some detail I forgot to mention, sometimes leads to my brain moving faster than my mouth, and the words come out all twisted and indetermined. As such, some of these cases are left as indicated, "(???)", so that the reader knows that it is simply a difficult to make out sentence or word that lacks clarity.
Aside from this transcription work, the Veterans History Project also has an event this Saturday, October 25th, that I will be lucky enough to have the time to volunteer for! This event takes place for the Orange County Veterans Services 80th Anniversary Resource Fair, where many other vendors, volunteers, and benefit organizations will be set up to celebrate and provide resources for the veterans of our community. We will be setting up a table and informing students and community members about the work that we do here at the UCF Public History Center for our project, providing the opportunity to learn from us, and us from them. This event will take place at the Orange County Multicultural Center from 10am to 4pm, and all who are interested are very encouraged to visit our table! I'm looking forward to meeting many of the members of our community, and engaging with individuals interested in learning more about the services offered not only by the Veterans History Project, but opportunity presented by the UCF Public History Center at large. I'm sure other vendors and volunteers of this event will have plenty of information for myself to soak up as well, and I eagerly await the event.
